The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) of India announced that it has delayed the date by which manufacturers must comply with its system to track and trace drug exports. The guidelines were revised in May 2015, giving manufacturers fewer than five months to add barcodes to tertiary and secondary packaging and start uploading the data to a central portal. The Drug Authentication and Validation Application (DAVA). Bar code labeling at primary level is exempted until further notification. For the secondary level packaging, the government insists a one or two dimensional barcode, while tertiary level packaging requires a one dimensional barcode. The new deadline is March 31, 2016 for large companies, and March 31, 2017 for smaller companies. Smaller companies – termed small-scale industry, or SSI – had been vocal about their concerns with complying with the new requirements in the timeframes originally prescribed.
