The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) published national guidelines that include ethical and scientific considerations used in determining requirements related to stem cell product development and their derivatives, such as: • the classification of stem cells • levels of manipulation, and • restrictive areas of research. The guidelines do not apply to use of hematopoietic stem cells for treatment of various haematological, immunological and metabolic disorders. LifeCell, an FDA registered stem cell processing, storage and testing facility published a response challenging ICMR’s recommendation to suspend the commercial banking of stem cells from cord tissue, menstrual blood and other biological materials.
